I agree with you. A simple resistor is sufficient to see if there is no short circuit, but the unit will not works correctly with such a PSU. I also use another way when I try a new circuit : an electric lamp in series. It's better because the resistance increases with intensity. If the lamp shines, there is a problem, and if there is no problem the unit will probably works correctly. Of course you must choose the correct power for the lamp : 100 W for a television, and a few hundred mW for the Formant !
