formant stopped working!!!

formant stopped working!!!

2005-10-23 by markfrancombe

OH GOD GUYS...!
After a long while carefully removing modules one by one from an old
Formant that was dusty and dodgy.. but worked... I fitted new front
panels to 3 VCO's and the 24db filter, removed the PSU to a new box,
added power plugs to send power to the modules. I finally fitted into
my rack (that contains some Blacet and Paia stuff) and its stopped
working!!!
Now its getting power (the VCO LED's on the PW lights up) but theres
no sound from either the outputs of the VCO's OR the output of the
filter (which has the VCO's hard wired into it).
I HAVENT connected the little "interface" board, as Im not intending
on using a keyboard, and theres no 12db filter in the chain, should
this matter?

Can anyone help?
What could I have done wrong?
Where should I look for errors?
Does the fomant only work if its ALL there? Can the modules work
seperately?
Does the "interface" board do something that I dont know about? (I
thought it was only for connecting the keyboard?

Any Ideas/help welcomed

Cheers Mark

PS: In trying to resurect my old modular I seemed to have killed
it!! :-(((

First of all chill, These things are made to test you. All will be fine ;-)

First, remind me is this the old formant or the mss2000 version?

Second how are you controlling your modules? CV and gate, you need to have
these input in to your modules before they will actually do anything.

I have built a version of the new mss2000 and had several problems getting
it going but got there once I had sorted out my interfaces.

Look at the system bit by bit, yes each module will do something on its own.

there is more to do and look at but this will be something simple.

First I want you to make sure that the VCO has a CV controlling it usually
about 3V should let you hear something. From there check the output with a
set of cheap earphones, dependant on your jack/socket size. changing this
voltage should allow you to hear something if not then try adjusting the
octave control and tune maybe just out of hearing range.

I log on to check emails most nights about this time so get back to me.

Remember if it doesn't work first time don't change anything just sit back
read the manual.

I really think this is a simple problem so do not go to far trying to fix it
just yet, as this caused me more problems with mine.

Check your CV connections and gate connections to each module. I created a
new bus system for mine which accepts my power supplies, CV and gate. This
way I can check it quicker, hard to do with the original system.

speak to you soon
Kris
