Hi Frank, The way I see it, if you need to know.ask. It's for storage of sounds and sequences just like the Floppy Disk Drive only without all the hassle of wear and tear. The FDD on the Ensoniq SD1 is an old Sony Format with different pin-outs than the type readily available nowadays, so if it goes it may be difficult to get a replacement and you will have to pay over the odds if you do track one down. Also, as this device uses solid state memory (no head seeking or other moving parts) it should return data much quicker than the current drive. Your FDD would have to be at least partially working for this device to work as it plugs in via the existing drive and relies on the drive reporting back to the OS. My original FDD started playing-up in 1999 and I was fortunate enough at the time to have a contact in Sony who helped me get a hybrid drive with the "brains" and pin-outs of the old Sony format. The replacement drive has been running since but drives don't tend to live forever. They tend to become a bit intermittent as the head wears, as happened with the original. However, even if you have a drive which occasionally throws a "bad data" error this device should still run fine as long as the FDD reports back ok to the OS. For this device to totally replace the FDD it would require much more "brains" and would therefore be much more expensive. I hope this is of help to you. Look at the HDM-UNIFlash in the following link: http://www.2av. <http://www.2av.com.ua/indexe.htm> com.ua/indexe.htm Excuse me if this is old news but it's new to me and I just spent 3 days of intensive searching in the hope that someone had invented such a device. I was just about to give up the ghost when I encountered this. If you've used it / heard about it then please let me know. Cheers, John _____ No virus found in this incoming message.
