The VFX is basically the same keyboard as
the SD-1 including sound set EXCEPT the
following:
No Floppy drive (cartridge instead) (VFX-SD
has)
No Sequencer (VFX-SD
has)
No new 24 drum kits (VFX-SD
has)
No upgradeable OS except
via chip (VFX-SD has floppy loadable OS)
Some VFX's have had calibration errors due
bad connections (mine has not)
However, with all that said, the SD-1 is
the mature product with many less problems of it's ancestor, the VFX
series. Comments also confirm the outputs of the VFX have a bit more
hiss noise than the SD-1.
See www.vintagesynth.org Ensoniq->VFX
& SD-1 for more of the history details. Wikipedia also has go info at
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Ensoniq_VFX although
I see not all their info seems to be accurate. I believe several of
our members have both so they might be able to describe anything
else subtly different......

I am interested in replacing my SD-1 because it is very shakey and I
fear it wont last very long. Ideally, I would replace it with another
SD-1, but they are very hard to come by. I have been offered a pretty
nice VFX via a online auction site. How does the VFX perform compared
to the SD-1? I mainly use the SD-1 for strings and pad sounds so I am
most interested in knowing how these sounds differ from the two
synths.
Thanks for any help
Cheers
