yes there was and you can get eeproms with a little bit more cicuitry to 
address more banks head over to the sweet sixteen project for sy85 he has 16 
64k banks on a 1mb eeprom

  There was a EEPROM for the VFX that was two seperate banks and a switch to

  its been done with the sy85 where a 1mb eprom was used to adress 64k 
blocks
  so that it could switch between
