experimentation is the best method and reverse engineering
take a patch you like then go to each page and see how it was constructed by the params used
and the other and most gratifying is the test and see see what a modulater is set to then mess about with the amounts at 10 or 5 increments and decrements and see what it does to the sound
write what each amount does
and then try it with every modulator
then do layering and detuning to get fat chorus sounds with out fx like on analog synths
and use the noise setting in pitch so that you can set a drift
set fx and see what they do add the mod wheel as the fx modulator for fx amount
you then can in real time see what fx at different amounts do
the ensoniqs use pcm+wavetable scanning pcm synthesis and subtractive filter base so you start with max spectra and use the filters to sculpt the sound by removing frequencies you dont want
there are preset envelopes try them and see what changes they do to the sound
try them on the pitch to see what it does
trial and error is the best way to becoming a great programmer as some mistakes are very rewarding that you would of never done before write these down as the become usefull tips and the things that dont work write them down then youwill save time in programming by seing them in your list and go we wont do that
i have been programming synths since the early 80,s and im still learning
if you want to learn about transwave synthesis i have a workshop group teaching how to program using this technique

There are more comprehensive books out there, but this is a good starting point in my opinion. Too many books are now out-of-print that directly correspond to Ensoniq gear.
Your son might get something out of a editing package for whatever computer system he is using. Sound Quest makes a pretty straightforward editor or he could go with the tried and true button mashing to create sounds [big fan of that method!] Good luck!

Thanks all! Somehow the master tuning was changed to 56. After resetting it to 0 all was better! It belongs to my 12 ye old son for his band of fellow 7th graders. He is slowly learning how to use and control the VFX-SD. He got it on Craigslist and it was in very good shape! Can anyone recommend a book or DVD to help tutor him? Like synths for dummies...lol??

Hi.
Also check that the pitch bend wheel is returning to center: When the synth is powered OFF, the settings are remembered - same if you are stepping on the hold pedal and power off.

Sounds like the master tuning might be set to something besides A=440
Go into the SYSTEM page and make sure the master tuning is set to zero.
If all else fails try a system reset (this will restore everything to factory defaults).
Hold down
Preset+Soft Button 1: Initialize system
While turning on the power.

I seem to recall he may have or have had some health issues, but there was a recent "VFX-SD for sale" post to this mailing list that was approved by the Rish in his capacity as moderator of this list. So if you can read this, Rish, please contact me.
