Thanks for the reply Fabio and Karm. It appears I need a midi interface cable. There's ones that plug into USB and ones that plug into the midi port on your soundcard. Are some better than others, or will any do? There also seems to be a lot of different versions of "Cakewalk". Is 'Cakewalk Pro audio 9" any good? Is Sonar better? What would you recommend?
