GM Drum Map for VFX-SD

GM Drum Map for VFX-SD

2004-10-23 by Harry

Hello group, I hope that are doing well.

I am writing a new song using the Ensoniq drums (Ballad-Kit) and was
wondering if anyone figured out a drum map that configured to GM
without using the sequencer or preset portion of the synth.

I love the entire kit of the Ballad-Kit, but since it is pre-GM, I am
having to use two tracks for drums now, one for GM and the other just
for the Ensoniq (on a different MIDI channel too).

I have created a custom kit that utilizes the kick/snare type deal,
but want to use all of the sounds in the drum kit.

Can anyone help?

Thank you,

what exactly are you asking for? roland and 808 drums are gm. I also have
done a conversion map from ballad kit to gm in the giebler
program.............frank

Re: GM Drum Map for VFX-SD

2004-10-26 by Harry

Thank you for the response.

I am looking for a way to copy a drum kit, mainly the Ballad-Kit
because of the big toms, into a map that is compatible with GM so
that I may use the Ensoniq drums (all of them in the kit) in
sequences that I have written.
I play in a band where I am the keyboardist, bassist and drummer; the
majority of bass and all drums are done in the sequencer. I
currently use my Roland XP60 as the main sequencer. I also use the
sounds in it, including the drums. I trigger an Alesis QS6, which is
mainly on a preset(s) I have created that use drums and bass, to get
a fuller drums and bass sound.
I have the bass parts taken care of because they go to their
respective channel from the XP60 and trigger anything on Channel 7.
Since I have gotten my VFX-SD, I have fallen in love with the ballad
kit again, and currently have a custom kit that uses the kick and
snare from that kit.
The problem is this: I do not have the sequencer loaded in the VFX-
SD, because the floppy drive does not work. This forces me to use
template for tracks 1-12 on the VFX-SD as my multi-timbral setup on
that synth. I do not anticipate getting the unit fixed until after
the 1st of the year or when taxes come back, whichever allows for the
funds to do so (I have my Christmas album from 2003 and my 2002
release, Finding Hope, selling in stores in the area and online).
Right now, I am writing music my another album and I am currently
using track 10 for the drums (all the GM drums of course) and track
11 for the VFX alone. Combining the kits make for a wonderful drum
kit (especially on the toms and snare) and I would like to be able to
do that in every song I do (for the cover band and/or for my own
music), with the ballad kit and the other kits I trigger on my GM
machines.
I remember somewhere, probably in the Transoniq Hacker, where someone
brought up the issue of GM kits on the VFX and SD-1 and I do not
remember if it was answered.

I hope that helps. If there was a way that I could convert the data
file to a file that can be read by my Roland XP60 or Yamaha MDF-II
Data Filer, that would be great too. My computer is set up for
strictly computer and administrative duties, rather than MIDI.

I downloaded the Geibler software to convert stuff to a format the
VFX could read, but the program said my floppy drive was not
compatible, so I gave up.

I also got a hold of Thesoniq today and he did not give specific
pricing on what it would cost to get my synth fixed, other than it
was $70 for labor and $75 for the new floppy. I am going to get the
entire synth redone (new ROMs, updated O/S and whatever else I can do
to make it new again), but again, that will be after the 1st of the
year.

I hope this explains it a little better. I sure am happy that I got
the VFX; I had been looking for one for many years and finally found
one in the pawn shop for $250.00 . Once I get it up and running 100%
with the sequencer and other sounds accessible by floppy, I will be
pleased.

punch up the ballad kit, write down all the settings from edit drum map
page, then select a drum kit in the int bank so you can save it, reproduce
the settings you wrote down, in a gm map............frank

Re: GM Drum Map for VFX-SD

Frank,
I will look at that tonight. I have been going into the Wave Edit
page, selecting which sound to work with, and changing the key range
in the output screen. I must have been doing it wrong. The problem
is that it seemed as though the ballad kit was a Multi-Drum sound and
was permanently assigned to a range of keys that were not able to be
changed. I will look at your instruction tonight and let you know of
my results.

Laurent,
I am not aware of sending any mail to you at any time that I have
been sending e-mail. I do not recognize your address and if you are
getting e-mails, then possibly you are set up to get e-mails from
this board or something.
There is also the possibility that someone has spoofed my address
and sending stuff around. It seems to happen quite a bit nowadays.

Frank, I did not have the chance to try out the drum thing yet, but
plan on doing that tonight. I will keep you posted on my progress.

Thank you,

Frank,
I am looking for the drum map page that you are talking about and
cannot readily find it. Are you speaking of the Output screen where
it is showing the key assignment for each sound?

I am a little lost on that part of it all. Fan you give me more
insight as to which screen you are talking about?

Thank you,

Harry Ebbeson III
