I do remember that the VFX has the option of setting velocity to top out at 99 rather than 127. The DX7 was made when MIDI was new. It's keyboard sends values from 0-99 insetad of the customary 0-127. If the DX sounds brighter than you'd like when played from the VFX, then you might feret out that setting.
