With one synthesizer, two. One out and one in to the computer. PLUS the MIDI interface.

The KORG uX (among others) can do with one USB connection.

Quickly guys... how many cables does it take to hook up a midi system?

To be able to access memory and program synths from a computer, it is nedded that the OUT from each synth gets connected too.

Thank God, cables come in a variety of lengths :)

I gave this careful consideration a while back. I believe that

regardless of the number of units you have, you just have to

count the number of midi IN jacks (ignoring OUT and THRU), and

you will never need more cables than that.

However, at least one cable will always be at least 3 inches too

short. Round up to 8 cm if you're in one of *those* parts of

the world.

I think you misunderstood what I was saying. Yes, the OUTs of the synth
need connecting, but the OUT from the synth will be connected to an IN
on the computer midi interface. One end of each cable will always be
connected to an IN port, so you never need more cables than you have
IN ports, no mater how many OUTs or THRUs you have available on
your devices.

(If you have one of those older PC game port midi adapter cables,
and it has MALE connectors, that's kinda non-standard and I admit
it throws a wrench into my IN port counting method...)
