Blown Fuses on inside board

Blown Fuses on inside board

2009-11-01 by jstopa1955

Hello,

I've purchased the Ensoniq VFX-SD back in the early 90's and have been using it in many bands throughout the years and recently in a new act called SeeQuence.

www.seequenceband.com

I am using it live as a sequencer driving it's internal sounds and playing it live. The sequencer drives an Alesis D4 Drum module and an Alesis Nano Bass module. I also use a Yamaha P-200 Piano and play a Taylor and Breedlove acoustic guitar in the show.

I had implemented the keyboard modification (1998), and had the soft buttons replaced.... probably due to the excessive use when programing the sequencer. The only strange problem I have experienced twice.... is the synth went electrically dead. The outside fuse was OK, and it turned out that 2 of the six internal fuses were open. I replaced them once and 5 years later it happen again. I now replaced them with a slo-blo type thinking bad power???? caused an intermittent inrush current surge????

Has anyone ever experienced this??????

Hi,

I had a VFX-SDII back in the 90's with this very problem. Towards the end I was changing fuses quite regularly (they would blow 2-3 at a time) and then one day the synth actually caught fire (!). Sadly, she was too far gone to repair after that.

Last year I was lucky enough to find an SD1/32 on Ebay for $400. I love this synth, I hope it lasts for a while.

Seneca

Yes, a repeated fuse blowing is a sign of a problem. Some component is drawing too much current, look for components that are running hotter than expected. You will need to solve it or keep a fire extinguisher handy !
