VFX crashes when ROTO.SPKR selected

VFX crashes when ROTO.SPKR selected

2012-08-13 by mailfor.taliesin

Hi! May I tap your brains, please?

I bought my VFX (no -SD) new(-ish, ex-demo) around 20 years ago and have always liked the sounds. Unfortunately, I haven't been able to use it recently because, whenever I select a Leslie-type sound such as the B-3 patch ("Drawbars", I think), it signals an error (35, if I remember correctly) and resets itself, recalibrating the keyboard repeatedly. A power-down and hard reset is required to bring it back to sanity.

A little investigation shows that this failure is triggered (almost) any time a ROTO.SPKR effect is selected. ("Almost", because once in a while it will work for a few seconds, even a minute or two, before going into crazy mode).

This is particularly disappointing to me because I liked to set my rig up with my Korg CX-3 (single-manual B-3 clone) above the VFX so that the pair made a half-way adequate imitation of a full B-3. For sure, that pair is a lot lighter!

However, a keyboard that is likely to need a hard reset in the middle of a set is of no use on a gig so my VFX has been languishing at the bottom of my pile of keyboards for several years. I would rather like to get it back to the top - has anyone else met a similar fault? Or have any ideas how to fix it?

All suggestions gratefully received!
