This sounds vaguely like the keyboard problem you already know about.
You mention that you know about it, but not that you've actually done
it.  Have you?

My VFX-SD had something vaguely similar; I took it apart, and found
the hardwire mod had already been done.  But I re-soldered the
connections anyway, and either that or the fact that disassembly had
the side effect of cleaning some of the connections fixed my problem.

I,m going to open it up and give it a cleaning and do some investigating
over the holidays.
