Hi Steve,

if you are still looking for a simple schematic program, try 
ExpressPCB.  the latestest version has a schematic side.  I just got 
it, so cannot comment on it's usefulness.

I also tried a pair of programs ISIS and ARIES from PROTEUS  these 
are demo vesions and do a nice job.
