Yes, it'll be 25 pin. You will also need to wire up an adapter as the pins aren't quite standard. Yes, it's very important that it be serial. HP plotters also come with an HP-IB interface, it is almost like SCSI in that it is an 8 bit parallel bus with addresses for each device. It requires an HP-IB interface card in your computer. ISA HP-IB cards go for about $150 even used, and $400 for PCI versions. So yes, it's important that it be serial.
