Homebrew PCBs

I'm sure this is a fairly basic question, but I was given a PCB layout 
to etch that is about 3" tall and 4.25" wide.  I've just found out that 
I need the PCB to fit into a 4" x 4" space.  I've been looking at the 
layout to see if there is any "empty" space I can get rid of, but I'm 
having a hard time.  I've found the schematic online and might try to 
make a new layout from that.
Anyone else have any similar experiences?  This is the first time I've 
had to do this, so I was wondering what the best way to approach this 
would be.
