I've taken to purchasing ready made USB/RS232 adapters and using them for my purposes. They are so cheap you can hardly mount any IC on a PCB for the money. You can easily remove the MAX232 if 5V interface is desired (the cheapest converters at dealextreme have a slip-on cover instead of molded plastic, so are easy to take apart).
