That, indeed, is the one and only method I've heard of (short of  
actually silk screening it on).

On a 1-layer board you TT the copper side and then TT the components  
on the top.

This moves the raw source file on disk only. The archive index is not changed automatically, so you still need to run a manual refresh afterward.
