You can use anything you want as a carrier, but the top surface of the PCB MUST be grounded while the print is being made. If you use a non-conductive carrier you can use copper foil tape and a grounding clip that disconnects before reaching the drum. Metal seems easier to me, but ...? The drum does not seem to be that fragile. I do lightly file the other three edges of the pcb.
