The marks look very dramatic on the scan, this is the light from the 
scanner, in real
life you can hardly see any scratches.
I use 600grit paper, it really isn't as bad.
I have steel wool but i like the paper more...

The cleaning is much more important than sanding (IPA works well).

well, i'm off drilling that board..
