That they usually are. But the motor assembly is at one side, running the parts that feed and shred the paper. Generally it is a rectangular top for a waste basket, with a slot in the center. Cut the rest of the housing off, at the end of the slot where the motor is, then you get that end of the unit stopping at the slot, just holds the motor and gears. Easy enough to work out attachment etc from there. I get them free from shredders that have gone bad with bent cutters, likely if you have a big office type area around you can get one for asking, so have used them for a few things here and there. I do like my gearhead steppers much better, but they're a little harder to come by for most people.. Alan
