Smallest trace?

Smallest trace?

2003-05-10 by Neil

Curious ... how small a trace width can you reliably get with your
home-etching system? I've been doing most things at 15-20mil so far, but
wondering if I might get 10 mil reliably.

Cheers,
-Neil.

I think it is mostly a function of the artwork quality, and the collimation
used on the UV exposure. Using transparencies made on an old LaserJet IIIp I
can do 12/12 mils reliably, with 10 mil tracks between pads. I've heard of
people going down to 8/8 with better printers.

I have gotten professional results at 7 mil with photo etch. I have not
tried smaller as I have never had the need.

Neil: Last time I had taken artwork over to the nearby professional
multilayer PTH house I have used in the past, and asked, the lady (yes, it
was a nearly-all-gal shop!) said they reliably do 10 mil wide traces with 5
mill space between, but she declined to show me a working example! Always
quick to invoke the "OSHA rules" to those of us who ask, "Show me, please!" !
