New Laser Priner suggestion

New Laser Priner suggestion

2007-02-08 by Gary Hoyles

I'm about to get a new laser printer as the last one popped due to power lines falling down here in high winds a few weeks ago and put 450 Volts into mains system.

As i will be using this for toner transfer does anybody have a suggestions as to what would be good. I was looking at the HP laser jet 1022 as its 1200 dpi, Don't really want to spend to much as i have a lot of other bits to replace too.

Oh, and i now swear by UPS power supplies with Surge protection, as my PC survived!

I like the idea of the flat nozzle, I just run the small perhaps .5in round nozzle around until I
push the print button. OK so now a temp sensor that starts the print on reaching the correct temp.
Oh boy something else to make. I don't know if all the "C" models are the same (seems so) but it
doesn't start printing right away each time. Sometimes there is a big delay before print, other
times its immediate. This means I have to keep the heat on and wait.

Replace the fuse in it. If it still blows, replace the main electrolytic
and/or switch-mode regulator transistor.

Also check for surge supressors (may look like a big disc ceramic cap); many
of them fail in short mode 8o((.

if the printer definitely didn't make it, at least you can make a nice
laminator out of the remains...

Well considering this is a group for cheapskates (otherwise you'd just pay the money
to get someone to make your boards), paying $200 for a new printer goes against the grain;)

You could go and buy one identical to the old one, then you'd have two. I
like having spares...

Why not stick with an older rebuilt unit like a laserjet 4000? 18 ppm and
1200 dpi. I have one rebuilt and nearly new that I will be selling soon for
about $200 plus ship. Has 2 250 sheet trays. It's a 4000TN but no jetdirect
but can install one if needed for extra. Ship weight about 50 lbs. Has 9300
or so pages total, about 50 since new fuser and rollers (maint kit). It
won't be till late next week as I'll be gone out of area.

Great Sales Pitch!

But unfortunately I'm in the UK,and will be out printer shopping tomorrow.

I liked the old 4000 HP printers, Have worked them very hard in the past and only the rubber rollers need replacing from time to time and they keep on going.

Anyway, will be on the hunt tomorrow, as i mentioned getting a new printer to a friend and she is looking for a colour (US translation COLOR) laser, so tomorrow will be fun ( I hope)

You will probably be very disappointed with the build quality of modern
printers. They are not as well built as they used to be, but then, you can
also move them by yourself now ;-)

Look _very_ carefully at the cost of consumeables. You can easily get a
bargain printer only to find the toner cartridges are far too expensive.

I'd definitely suggest going second hand, though it does rather defeat
the point of getting a new printer.

I've got a HP 5N with a duplex unit, and it's still going strong at a
page count of 302,000 pages (yes, three hundred thousand).

Best of all I got it free....

My favorite is the lexmark Optra L or R series. You can get this for
a couple of peanuts on ebay. The cartridges are cheap too, except you
buy them direct from IBM/Lexmark. There is a nearly flat pass trough
via manual paper tray and you are able to print to thic paper without
troubles. May be I should try it direct to PCB with a nearly empty
cartridge ;-)

With 1200 dpi this one is not realy fast but very clear, robust and
cheap. With 600 dpi it is fast enough for me.

Martin

P.S. Can someone explain me, why very often you can read the same
texts in 5 or 6 mails again? Please remove the old portion of text
that is not necessary to follow the thread.
Thanks

Re: New Laser Priner suggestion

Even though, you seemingly have repaired your printer:

HP 2100 is very good, cheap to get on ebay. Do not forget to look for
a program to set the density to 5 , it is somewhere around in the
internet.

Use original toner, i had tried two different 3rd party toners with
NO luck

Move to quarantaine

This moves the raw source file on disk only. The archive index is not changed automatically, so you still need to run a manual refresh afterward.
