Printer choice

2007-07-05 by Peter Harrison

Hi

It looks like my old printer (A laserjet 4mp) is about to give up on me.
so, anyone got good advice on a replacement?

Either a laser for toner transfer or an inkjet for transparencies.
Small, quiet and cheap would be good as well.

I use an HP DeskJet 3940 with Premium JetStar film, it was cheap and works
very well. I can do 8 mil tracks without any problems.

Hi Pete,

I'm using a Lexmark Optra E+ with toner refills. It worked okay for
paper transfers, but it was too tedious to remove the paper. I've
switched to using inkjet transparencies.

I got my printer on eBay for around $40 shipped. Toner refills are
about $10 each (vs. new cartridges at $80 ea).

Regards,
Dennis

Any recommended laser printers that are cheap for home use for the toner transfer method? I have read before about the p1005/p1006 from HP but they seem to be discontinued.

It depends on the paper. The catalog paper I use lifts right off after a couple minutes of soaking, I don't have to scrub it at all normally, sometimes just a little with fine pitch pads like SSOP ICs.
