To tin or not to tin

To tin or not to tin

2007-11-24 by Dave

Is tinning necessary? What is the most cost effective way to buy the
tinning solution and how is it applied? I usually buy bulk if things
don't have shelf life to worry about.
Thanks,
Dave

I tin my boards because they look nicer, in the main! (The copper
tarnishes rather fast).

The tinning crystals last a longn time, but made up solution breaks down
after a few months - so make it up in small amounts.

Where is the best place to buy the tinning crystals?
Thanks,
Dave

I find the small amount of resist left on the board after cleaning it off
with IPA stops the tracks from corroding.

Try RS catalogue number 567-812

They are a bit expensive though, but 450g should last years if you only
make up a small amount of solution at a time (made up solution doesn't
keep for all that long, best I've got is about 4 months - but the crystals
themselves last for a long time. I keep made-up solution in one of those
expanding photo developer bottles so I can exclude as much air as
possible).

Does anyone know where to get these tinning crystals in the USA?

I do not tin my boards. I use the positive method using the MG
Chemcials 600 series boards. I leave the resist on, you do not have
to remove to solder. I also once I have loaded the board spray the
bottom with clear laquer. The clear laquer would also work well if
you do TT method as it will seal the copper.

Also try Allied Electronics www.alliedelec.com or Mouser www.mouser.com
they both carry some of the MG Chemical products. I don't do the
Tinning myself anymore so it has been a long time since I have bought
any.

Mark,
I found these 2 places. The second place is slightly cheaper but they
are out of stock until the 27th of Nov which is just a few days away.

I don't know if it matters but I plan on using the Gootee method so I
just ordered some tinning crystals to be safe. If I don't feel the need
to use them I can do without later. I am just getting my materials in
order before I start.

The tinning solutions all seem to contain pretty nasty chemicals, so
take appropriate care.

There is also hot tinning, or coating with various other stuff as alternative.
