Best printer for getting opaque prints for UV photomasks?

Best printer for getting opaque prints for UV photomasks?

2007-12-24 by pixelpajas

Hi,

Currently I'm are using a Laserjet 1100 for my photomasks as it prints
really opaque black prints well on OHP transparencies. However when
the lines become to thin (<0.35mm) small holes start to appear at
random along the lines. This forces med to spend way to much time
covering the holes with a marker pen.

Another problem is that the printer distorts larger PCB designs to
such an extent that i becomes impossible to align large double sided
PCB's. I could deal with the distortion if it was linear on both sides
but the elongation of the y axis due to heat up of OHP transparencies
is unfortunetely somewhat different on the sides. I could probably buy
some thick tracing paper to avoid some of the distortion. But i would
rather find a new good printer that just works with transparencies (if
at all possible).

So are there any recommendations on laser printers that have worked
well for you guys?

Cheers

Fuji Xerox Docucenter 440.

However as a cheap option consider an
inkjet.

After Derek kept on about how great they
where I gave my little inkjet a try and
got surprisingly good results. Not as
good as the Fuji-Xerox but 1/100th the
price.

The Inkjet easily did better than my
little Laserjet4000 home/personal sized
laser printer - so If I don't need
absolute best quality I save the 1/2
hour drive to get to the fuji-xerox and
just use the inky.

Does 8/8 quite acceptably.

Also experiment with colors. Some inks have UV blockers in them to
prevent fading. I found green works best with my Epson printer. Although
black looks a lot denser it seems to be more transparent to UV than the
green.

I get good results from a cheap HP inkjet printer with JetStar Premium film.

Forgett lasers for this purpose, these days, get a Canon Pixma 4300. An
alternative some time ago was the Epson Stylus C62 (set to premium
glossy photo paper quality), but it's no longer available. This way
traces down to 0.15mm are realistic and reproduceable and since no heat
is involved, distortion is no issue or if still present, linear and you
can compensate for it with something like CorellDraw etc.

Ok, so the way to go seems to be inkprinters nowadays.
What kind of transparencies works best with these printers?
Do the printouts have a long settling/dry-time?

I don't know what other users here use, but I made very good experience
with Avery/Zweckform 2502 overhead transparencies. Drytime is (in my
case) close to zero.

It depends on the printer.

> Do the printouts have a long settling/dry-time?

I leave it for 30 minutes at least, just in case.

When I print on the car priced laser I use
vellum. When I print on the inkjet I use
just normal hi-res clay-coat inkjet paper.

My inkjet exposures takes 8 minutes instead of
1 but it has less drop-outs/voids in black areas
than when I tried vellum (generic or jetstar).

Get yourself a Good Inkjet printer, and use Good Transparencies
designed for the printer your using.

I use HP printers myself. Have a CP1700 and also a All in One HP 7410
both have worked for me using using Transparencies for HP's, really
works best when you use Real HP Transparencies.

You might want to look at the Photo printers.

Yellow works good too.

Makes sense. Green is printed as a mix of cyan and yellow. On some
printers, if you remove the black cartridge they will print black as a
mix of all 3 colours. This should give a really dense result. I haven't
tried this because the green works well for me.

  Try this site.
  http://www.systemfacilities.com/lgn.htm

Look at the NewsCraft LGN Imaging Paper.

I have had good results with it. Very stable.
