Toner Transfer Printer Recommendation

Toner Transfer Printer Recommendation

2010-02-14 by g6lbq

Hi Everyone, this is my first post in the group.

I am interested in making my own PCB's using the Toner Transfer method and was wondering if anyone can suggest a reasonable priced current production laser printer that is known to work with the toner transfer method.

Hopefully someone has recently bought a Laser Printer and is having success and can answer my question.

It would be helpfull if you could also tell me what kind of paper you are using.

Thanks

Andy

Boy does everyone have their own ideas there. For sure way to make it work you need 3 things. Printer, paper, and a laminator.

Printer: HP P-1006 is a decent printer that works and sells around $100 or less. I think I paid $70 (??) for my printer shipped off ebay.

Paper: Boy are there a LOT of suggestions there. From slick magazine paper to HP Presentation laser Color paper. "IF" you really want success at first (or 2nd) attempt, then breakdown and order some toner transfer paper from pulsar.com. It will cost you $20 shipped - you can get it from Digikey for maybe $17 or $18 shipped? That is "only" 10 sheets of 8X11 paper, but that will last a LONG time. I've reused the same piece of paper several times, and you can cut it to smaller pieces to use. Print your PCB to plain paper, then cut a piece of toner transfer paper a tad larger and tape along top edge to run thru printer. That stuff just floats off in water.

Then by all means break down and spend $25 for a GBC personal laminator you're read on this site. http://tinyurl.com/yf4g9zq is the one we've purchased, model H-65.

"IF" you are serious about making PCB - you can start with the iron (as I did) try different things, but this is about what you'll wind up with.

Good luck and have fun.

I use an HP LaserJet 1100 that I found at the dump with a cheap
replacement toner cartridge from eBay, and magazine paper. I got a GBC
Personal Laminator on eBay, from MyBinding.com for $25.

Proper preparation is more important than what you use, as long as you
stay away from Brother printers.

It's hard to go wrong with HP, I'm also having good luck with my Xerox, but I don't think it's current production.

I suppose you could take some transfer paper to a store and print something on it with several different printers and see which one makes the nicest transfer to copper. Doesn't have to be a PCB layout, text would work fine.

Thanks for the reply.

I can buy the HP LaserJet P1505/EN 23ppm USB 2MB Mono Laser Printer from my computer supplier here in the UK and I noticed from digging around the group this printer is having success so this could be the one I go for.

Just need to sort out which is the best paper to go with it now with availability here in the UK. Anyone???

Thanks again

Andy

You might find some HP High Gloss Laser Paper Q2419A - this seems to work pretty good.

You can always try a slick glossy magazine paper - the text on it doesn't seem to hurt much. This is a high clay content paper.

Good luck and have fun, Let us know how your results turn out.
