[Homebrew_PCBs] TT trace widths

[Homebrew_PCBs] TT trace widths

2010-03-25 by Mark Lerman

Has any been measuring the actual trace widths produced with toner
transfer? I would think that running it through a laminator would
significantly spread the trace. I just ordered a stage calibrator to
measure widths with my microscope, but I would be very interested in
hearing from anyone who had made these measurements.

I haven't measured the actual traces, but they look identical to the printout prior to transfer, no visible spreading at all.

When I tried this I used an iron, I found that if I put the iron too hot
or left it on too long caused the toner to spread out. I think this is
more critical than pressure.

Mark,
Where did you order the stage calibrator? I need to get a calibrator and a reticle for one of my eye piece for my B&L.

Craig,

Ebay, from a company named TaxiMarket . Search under stage calibrator
- there are loads of them listed.

If your traces are 10 mil wide and they spread by a mil or so on each
side, you might not notice. But that same spread is very noticeable
with 7 mil traces.

I can't find the recent post where I talked about this (I guess the search function is not yet working right??), but have a look at this test board that I did -- the patterns are 10/10, 8/8, 6/6, and 5/5. As you can see, after etching, the traces are not wider than the spaces; if anything, they are narrower.

Here is some data on trace measurements with TT,

About halfway down the page.
