Yes, it is the display - I built in a switch that isolates both wires of the display to eliminate the noise.  However, I find now that I actally don't use the backlight at all any more and just have an LED booklight above the screen instead.  I have done the same with my Roland MV30, which had the same issue.

The quality is very clear now, though I have put an RNLA compressor on the outputs to thicken the sound up a bit - works great.
