It should be a concern, open up the one you consider buying and check 
for leakage and functionality. You can replace it with another NiCD 
of the same specification (it's quite standard).

However, Iit's better to replace it with a Lithium one, AFAIK there 
should only be a resistor to be replaced with a diode in order to do 
so, but I'm still verifying it.
