Re: SX-240 stuck notes and questions

2010-12-16 by jimmyb00ts

Just a follow-up: I opened the synthesizer and removed the original battery. I am going to add a Lithiium battery soon but I figured for now I will play it without saving presets. When I turned it back on, the same two notes were stuck (the lowest G and A only, not the G sharp.) I'm wondering if these two notes could be stuck because of damage from the battery. I didn't see any visible damage on the PCB and the battery does not look like it has exploded, but the proximity of these two keys to the battery makes me wonder if that is possibly the reason.

Any thoughts? When I turn the synth on, the two notes (G and A) are stuck. When I play around and program the synth for a bit, they are silenced, after which point the G and A keys don't make any sound when I press them. So, the keys are dead but the G and A notes hang at startup.

Could it be open traces on the PCB?

I took my ohmmeter and did continuity checking on them. I found that, while the traces didn't LOOK open, some of them actually were. I found two that were open, so I used jumper wires to bypass those open traces. That fixed the synth.

You can replace the nicad battery with a standard CR2032 Lithium battery with a diode in place so the lithium battery does not receive a charge from the synth charging circuit. The battery would explode without a diode in place.
