Kawai sx210 bought defective

Kawai sx210 bought defective

2005-10-13 by brightoutside

Hi all!
I'm new to the kawai sx210 and I'm not a technician either..The
problem is that I live in Greece and there is not a single place to
get any analog equipment fixed.
The sx210 powers up and makes a continuous sound which you can only
alter its tune. Pressing the keyboard doesn't make any sound..
Does anyone have a clue what should be done?
I read about the battery leaking..is there any possibility this could
be the problem?
Thanks a lot,
Christos Panagiotakis

1. Is the sound played the same sound as on the patch you select ?
2. Do all other functions work ? i.e can you change presets, write,
change parameters ?
3. When chaning a preset do the contineous sound change accordingly ?
4. When playing the keyboard does it play correctly ? (i.e you hear
additional sound over the contineous tone)

hi brighty...

are you familiar with the synth theory ? maybe its just an enveloppe that is activated or the VCA that is turned off, check all of your settings before thinking of opening it up. But I really suggest that you then open the board and check if there is something leaking. Mine never leaked but it often happens

All the keys are dead.I can't select any patch.Basically you can't do
anything, it is jammed.I push the small buttons for example dco, lfo
and they don't even light. When you turn on the synth there is a tone
but you can't change anything and some of the button are lit others
are not.And no using the keyboard does not have any effect.
Is this a major problem, do you think it is fixable?
Thanks

Could it be the patches just need to be reloaded ?

It doesn't work because the battery for memory backup has been dead for years and emitting corrosive gas into the circuitry of the machine. Open it up and look for a blue cylindrical thing on the cpu bd (looks like a certain type of cordless phone battery, about as big around as a quarter and an inch or so long). More than likely you will find that on the ends (mainly the "-" end) there is a mold like substance. Now look around the surrounding area. Does it look like something was spilled onto the board in that area? That's corrosion damage to the board and its components due to the gas coming from the dead battery. It's possible to repair it, but sit down when you get the bill. Very time consuming and there's no guarantee it'll ever be right again. I recently gutted a Korg Poly 61 because of this. But that's ok, the poly61 sounds like shit and I needed a keybd/case donor for a synth I'm building anyway.

More details here

I repair these and if you are serious about getting it back on the road again we can talk.

First thing to do it opening it up and see if it *is* a battery issue.

Sounds good, no leak! I know sx240 has several fuses. I don't recall
those in the sx210. Check the fuses and connects.

Chances are it *is* a battery issue if it has been sitting for years unused. I couldn't get the pictures to load (I assume they were pictures from the filesize) but most older synths that were not used often and maintained properly will have issues with NiCd batteries. Assume the worst, hope for the best. Even if the battery has not outgassed yet, it may be damaged from sitting with no charge on it. In some cases NiCd's will internally reverse polarity, preventing them from taking a charge. So the presets are lost and the memory may in a "scrambled" state.

Bottom line: If no acid damage, replace the battery and try to load the factory presets via the tape input. If the display doesn't say "tape" when the tape input is enabled, the cpu bd isn't running correctly. Same for attempting to program a preset from scratch if the parameters/function selects don't display.
