Problems with my new SX-240

Problems with my new SX-240

2009-09-25 by Paul

Hello there,

I joined the group as I had recently won a SX-240 off Ebay.

It had a missing Patch Selector button - but otherwise looked okay.

However when it arrived and after some time testing it I found the following two problems.

1. The machine switches itself off when I try to load the Preset Voices - the Display reads LOAD for a few seconds and then the power cuts off.

2. There is an regular, periodic electronic "spiking" from the outputs - inaudible when the synth is played through headphones but when reverb is applied it exagerates it (even when both Osc's truned off the spiking is there)
This obviously makes it practically useless for recording.

Otherwise the machine is in a reasonable condition - It does have the original Time Bomb Battery fitted - there is no sign of corrosion though.
I've programmed a few voices and the memory is retaining them.

I'm quite disappointed - I got a good feeling from this synth and was looking forward to playing and recording with it.

Obviously there appears to have been only a few of these made so I should imagine that most emergent faults are likely to be unique.

Has anyone suffered from the above?

Regards,
Paul

The machine switches itself off when I try to load the Preset Voices - the Display reads LOAD for a few seconds and then the power cuts off.

very strange as you say you are retaining patchs you save.Is it as you load the patches it turns complely off or is it just the load tape that gos off?
my sx240 has never turned off by itself.could be lots of unique reasons as you have said. power source?? if its just tunring compleatly off.as for noise on the off.mine has a slight noise but its suttle and recordable. The only strange thing i have experenced using it alot is when I swich patterns and tracks way to fast then I should while jaming to fast from a master soucrce the sx240 slaved with give a glich.but i think that is due to it being on ommni and not all the patterns i go therw are muted as there saved. Was the nicad every replaced to your knowlage? How close did you inspect the traces and ics ? The nicad damage can be suttle to extreme when it starts to outgas.

The machine switches off completely - all lights go out and it has to be
switched off and on again before the lights go back on

Hi,

it looks like you've never had to use audio tape backup before.

all the lights go out in the load operation mode, that's how the synth
works.

If you send valid audio data to the tape in jack (like the factory
presets patch in the group's files section), it will display the data
bank's name for a while, and eventually beep and get back to normal. It
takes about a minute to load the bank.

While the machine seems irresponsive, if you want to return to normal
operation, press TAPE ENABLE again. The display will read BREAK for a
second and the synth will then work normally.

That is what I was thinking he was doing but you explanied it much beter then me.Hopefully that it is the issue. First time I did tape loads I was a little confused too but my synth never turned completaly off just reverted back to the non load tape mode.

Antoine,

Many thanks for the speedy post - most helpful.

I own a JX-3p and have had experience with Audio Tape backup (Commodore 64 user in the 80s) - I was thrown by the power appearing to go off on the SX-240.

Well thanks to your advice I was patient and waited and - presets loaded.

Again many thanks for your help

Paul

Re: [kawai-teisco] Re: Problems with my new SX-240

2009-09-27 by Antoine Deschênes

Hi again,

good to see that problem was solved. As for the spiking sound, if your
battery is dead, the synth will reset to defaults every times it's
turned on.
The problem is, the LOWER default sound isn't an actual preset, but just
random stuff. Try to see if the spiking is still present with different
presets.
Also, check if the LFO speed changes the spiking pattern. If not, it
might be the chorus chip, since you say it amplifies the problem.

The spiking sound would appear to be something new that my X Station has started to do when effects are applied to the inputs.

So in actual fact it would appear that my new SX-240 is actually fully operational :)
