new member questions

2005-03-19 by James DeMeo

Hello group!

Just joined and have a question about sample rates. I've been salvaging
some old vinyl-bakelite record cuts from my old band -- firstly I've transferred
to HQ analog audio tape, and now play the tape back into my Mac G4 running
Logic Express 7, with a MobilePre USB interface. Using the USB, that gives
either 44100 khz or 48000 khz sampling frequency. But the software says
also, it is possible to sample at 88200 or 96000. Two questions:

1. Is there an economic interface available that will allow those higher
sampling rates -- my search turned up nothing specific.

2. The ultimate goal is to burn the song cuts to a CD. I haven't got to that
stage as yet, and so wonder if it is over-kill to pursue such higher sampling
rates, if this higher-quality would be lost when burning to the CD? What's the
max high quality sample rate for a CD?

Thanks in advance.

James
