Some of the music magazines have run articles on this kind of thing, including hooking up multiple PCs and Macs. Nick's Virtual Instruments magazine has an article I believe, and Future Music or Computer Music (one of the British ones).

I'm starting to rack up a number of good AU instrument and effect
plugins. Is there a simple way of using the resources of both machines
linked together? Share the load of plug-ins across both processors?
Obviously Logic Pro can, but I want to work my skills up to that to
justify the expense. Apple X-grid looks interesting but I'm sure it can
only help such tasks as rendering to MP3 etc, no live stuff.
