The band's cdbaby address is http://cdbaby.com/volcano Well, It was recorded live to 12 tracks to Pro Tools LE. Then, I mixed and mastered it myself. I was not happy6 with most engineers approach. I used Seventh Circle Audio Pre amps (Neve and Jensen Twinservo Clones) for recording. I soldered/built the pres with my hands, I asked my friend for his rug ware house loft in New York City. These are spoiled musicians with very serious careers so they were sceptical a bit at the beginning. Then, the results made the happy though. This whole album was mixed in a fashion to replicate a live jazz band which is what it was. That is why I panned everything a bit narrower. Paul White mentions this in his article as well. He used Logic to mix it. I did my mixes in PT LE. His sound a bit softer than mine. I like the rawness in my mixes though. Mine does not sound too finished but it sounds intimate. I used Senheiser MD 421 MK II for sax, POD XT for guitar, (tried live amp did not like it as much), Apex DP-1 Drum set mmikes and 2 X Oktava MK -012 s with Scott Dorsey mods. For bass, I used 1 ATM-35 minin mike and 1 rode NT1 The Drummer plays with Charlie Haden and he was voted #1 rising star drummer in Downbeat Readers Poll 3 years in row. He is fun to play with. We will be playing @ our CD release party tomorrow. Sax Player, Eric Person has played/recorded with heavy cats like Dave Holland, Chico Hamilton and Ben Harper. Bassist Joe Fonda also has a very nice career so the musicianship was good. That helps a lot during the mix. I did not kill the mix with heavy brick wall limiter when mastering. Used 1 comp (waves), 1 2 band EQ and a touch of Maxim. The original mix is still heard all the way. I do not like to squash things, not for this kind of music anyways. I will give more info if you have questions... I am really happy with this album since it is recorde in true live fashion. That is how improviszational jazz is. We play off of each other. I tried to keep the melodies appealing and singable. It might attract non-jazz lsteners as well. That is what I hear from most muscians. But, since the spontanous playing is there, jazz lovers also like it I think. Here is the info for the release party for guys in/around New York.
