Re: Quantizing Audio

2007-05-04 by pete_buchwald

It sounds like there are two questions here??

1. How to adjust the BPM of an audio clip

2. How to quantize an audio clip.

Adjusting the BPM. Sometimes if I highlight an audio region it will follow a tempo
change I make. Alternatively, I adjust (cut, or add blank stuff with the glue bottle tool) so
that it fits perfectly in a certain number of measures. Then I adjust the tempo of the
session, and double click on my audio region, navigate to the Time and Pitch Machine, and
enter the appropriate information for adjusting the audio for length.

Quantizing audio. I only tried this once in Logic, I tend to use Pro Tools "Beat Detective"
for this usually. Ableton Live could make a case for being the best for this type of edit.

But in Logic: Make sure the audio clip is at the same tempo as the song. Then double
click on the audio portion you want to quantize. First go to the upper left menu and
"Create Backup" ... then head into the menu that contains quantize, and you'll probably
have to use trial/error to get satisfactory results. Breaking up the track into smaller
segments (say 4 measures, even 2 measures in some cases) can improve results. Then
add crossfades between the region cut points.

     Take care,

        Pete
