Thanks for the input (FTR: I had checked the Mixer, no results; I have no external synth) -- And I completely overlooked one of the cheapest, easiest fixes possible: simply re-enabled Core Audio. I'd rather know exactly what was going on so I could learn more of what to do, but I'll live with it.
