It appears to be a tough question - you don't want to waste your time on something that's already been done. But I feel that if you can't remember what the song is that you *might* be stealing.... then you probably should continue working on it, your version likely is different enough. Remember also that you can't come up with a new chord progression... they've all been used. It's easy to think with every new song you create, "oh, that sounds like that hit, this sounds like another..." if you just look at chord progressions. However, suppose your song isn't new? Even a song that is very very similar to a big hit can be a big hit itself (Ghostbusters vs. I Want a New Drug). That in itself may be reason to keep working on your song. Here's an idea - if you afraid of someone ripping off your song before you copyright, play it for some non-musician friends. They will be able to spot if the song sounds too much like another, but they won't steal it. [Non-text portions of this message have been removed]
