An outboard firewire drive (*if* it's a full-size 3.5" drive and not a notebook-class drive) will probably outperform the internal drive. The internal drive might be sufficient; I had a 40GB 4200rpm drive in my Powerbook when I got it, and it was fast enough for most tasks.
