Is there a way to edit out background noise--mostly white noise--from vocal recordings in a lecture setting? In particular for recordings done with handheld devices such as mini-recorders or ipods with an italk attachment.

Bias is another company located in Northern California. They are famous for Peak, and have a following of sorts. You may have seen their advertisements in which BT claims to use for editing samples in addition to using Logic to do his pieces. Bias has free trials of Peak and Deck and I think they have academic pricing too. I think their product for noise reduction is Soundsoap. They have a sale for SoundSoap 2 for $99. http://www.bias-inc.com/ It supposedly gets rid of hiss, hum, crackles, etc. They also have Soundsoap Pro : http://www.bias-inc.com/products/soundsoappro/ Whether you're archiving from vinyl, transferring studio and live analog recordings, performing forensic audio analysis, or battling a noisy recording environment, SoundSoap Pro scrubs away problems — leaving nothing behind but sparkling clean results. SoundSoap Pro offers unparalleled noise reduction and audio restoration — with a minimum of tweaking, and greatly reduced chances of undesirable sonic artifacts. Competing high-end solutions may do a decent job, but are typically complex, costly, and cumbersome — in some cases forcing you to tweak hundreds of controls before you can get close to your desired results. SoundSoap Pro combines, all in a single plug-in, three restoration tools — BroadBand, Click & Crackle, and Hum & Rumble — plus a sophisticated Noise Gate, for that final polish. A unique, fully integrated interface means you're only one click away from a complete arsenal of tools. SoundSoap Pro — it'll leave your tracks sparkling. Without taking you to the cleaners. Waves makes somethign too - but like 10 times the price.

Wow, thanks for the info. Is there a way though to accomplish similar things from within Logic? --- In Logic_Cafe@yahoogroups.com, GAmoore@a... wrote:

Are they programs or functions > of Logic? They are different programs. There is a denoiser plugin in logic that can help if you spend time with the settings. Strip silence can work pretty well too but you have to make judicious use of the fade in and fade out functions of the regions (parameter box on upper left.
