[OT] Rip It Up - iTunes Import Settings Survey

[OT] Rip It Up - iTunes Import Settings Survey

2005-05-05 by revDAVE

I'm curious to find out what importing format and bit rate settings you
generally like to use when importing audio into iTunes. Years ago, the
standard was MP3 at 128 bitrate - sample rate 44.1, but now I'm curious
what people like to do.

- considerations...

- Sonic quality ( At what rate can you tell the difference?)]
- Hard drive capacity
- iPod - mp3 player requirements ( some mp3 players cannot play AAC format
etc. ...)
- Any other considerations that you might think of ...

Q: Which format do you prefer - MP3 - AAC - Apple lossless - AIFF - WAV -
other?

Q: Which bit rate / sample rate do you use?

For Mp3, I can stop hearing the difference around 192kbps. For AAC, it's
closer to 160kbps, depending on the source. (This isn't on super hi-fi
equipment, either, though)

I've switched to AAC since I got an iPod Mini, due to the better
quality/size ratio.

I would use whatever modern format (i.e., AAC, Ogg Vorbis, etc.) that a
given player supports, as they tend to have better quality at the same
file size (or smaller files at the same quality, depending on how you look
at it)

I generally do AAC for the iPod's sake, and use 160kbps for most things.
Occasionally I can hear artifacts at 160kbps, so I'll re-rip at 192kbps.
