new powermacs

new powermacs

The price of the new powermacs is not bad at all.. $2400 or so. But to get 8
mb of ram, its more than $2000 more...putting it up to $4400 which is another
ballpark. It only comes with 1gb which is no way adequate. RAM is such a
hassle because you can buy it cheap elsewhere, but then you can have a lot of
problems with crashes, or else you pay through the nose for apple certified ram.
any ideas?

I have just decided to wait a few months before buying a new mac -
as you point out the ram price is too much.
Also it's never a good idea to buy the first generation of
a new type mac.
I'm sure there will be cheaper quality ram soon - so i'll wait and see.

Re: Price of RAM.

Hey,

I'll try to find out the specifics but there's a way to get the RAM cheaper.

I got a laptop and paid $99 for 1 Gig of RAM. I didn't want to pay the $400 for the 2
Gig, "maybe later when the price goes down, and if I need it" was my thought.

I go to school for recording arts and one of the teachers works at a studio. They
bought memory from both the Apple Store and ..... somebody else at the same time. The
memory came in identical packaging, and was the SAME. But the price was a lot more
reasonable.

I thought it was "smartmedia.com" but looking at that website ... that doesn't look like
the one.

I'll e-mail him and ask about it.

               Pete

Well in general, RAM is a hell of alot cheaper ANYWHERE else other than
Apple.. I still dont get how they rape people for those ridiculous
prices.. Especially after seeing the RAM that comes in the machines..
Youre right its the same brands everyone else carries, just with that
nice little Apple Service Part sticker on it instead.. You can go down
to Best Buy even and save yourself quite a bit of money if you just
order your Mac with the default RAM and upgrade elsewhere..

there is definitely cheaper ram than apple's. apple charges top top dollar
for ram. but supposedly the test it better and only a small amount of ram
succeeds. i ran into this a year ago when I was having a lot of crashes with my new
G5, and the apple store insisted i remove any 3rd party ram to test what the
problem was. I was told, and I believe that bad ram can cause all sorts of bad
behaviour.

I ended up getting Geil "Apple Certified" ram sticks or something like that.
Its important to also get the CAS number so its faster access ram too. I was
told at the local fry's that they recommend higher quality ram for digital
audio than other things.

I was having horrible system problems with black
writing on the screen, kernal panic, disk utility
could not fix. I ran the apple hardware test cd and it
showed bad ram. I took it out and put it in different
slots. knock on wood so far the problem has gone away.

they kept telling me to run the hardware test cd with my G5 to test the
hardware... finally it turned out that they never supplied a hardware test cd with
the model I got.

I sell RAM as part of my business, my supplier stocks SwissBit memory.
Excellent pricing, top quality RAM, lifetime warranty.

The key is to find a supplier/shop that offers lifetime warranty and
exchange in case it fails with your machine.
