DFH Superior Environment

DFH Superior Environment

2007-06-29 by Simon Binks

Would any kind soul have a Logic Pro 7 (or 6) Environment for DFH Superior they could
share. I have the latest DFH release (160) and Logic 7.2. whatever (latest).

I have been using DFH Superior since it first came out but I'm not satisfied that I have the
Environment set up correctly. I have the movie they recently released but there is much
unexplained.

I have used Logic since it's inception in the late 80's when Gerhard Lengeling met with me
and converted me from Performer, so my Logic skills are OK. Mind you, I still only use it as
an audio recorder and have not bothered with many of the more intricate details - but the
real problem is with Logic/DFH.

For example, how does one get a separate output for a ride cymbal? The manual is
so...big, for a working musician to struggle through.

That sort of stuff.

I tried the Toontrack site but was recommended to a Logic User's Group.

Appreciate any assistance.

Sincerely,

Simon Binks. sjbinks@bigpond.net.au

Hi Simon, If you really want a template i can send it to you (not in front of my studio
computer at the mo), however its pretty easy to do;

1.Open an environment window, click on the layer pull-down in parameters (on the right)
and go down to create.
2.Go to the local (ie in the window) menu tab new and select Audio Object.
3.Click on the new object (or dbl click if you don't see it as a channel strip) and, under the
'cha' parameter select aux 1 (or the next unused aux)
4.repeat above steps (2-3) so you have 11 different auxes (ie aux 1, aux 2 etc.)
5.Repeat step 2, but instead of an aux, create an audio instrument.
6.Load Superior into this instrument (as a multi, not stereo)
7.In Superior go to settings and make sure stereo mixdown is NOT checked (if it is
deselect it, remove the Superior plugin from the instrument and then re-load it)
8.Select the first aux you made and on the input pulldown select Instrument x (where x is
where you've loaded the plugin) and choose Drummer 3 from the sub-menu, this will give
you the kick channel. There is a full list in the dfh manual, but here's a quick list;

1/2-These come from the Audio instrument itself and carry the stereo Ambient mic/s
3-Kick
4-Snare Top
5-Snare Bottom
6-RackTom 1
7-RackTom 2
8-RackTom 3
9-FloorTom 1
10-FloorTom 2
11-Hats
12-Kick Ext. (never used this one, not sure what it does!)
13/14- Overhead NOTE, you will need to set this aux as stereo.

Repeat step 8 for all the channels above (or however many you use)

The plugin lets you choose bleed levels between mics (I'll let you read the manual for that!)
But as standard, you can use the bleed matrix (sounds like a gory computer game!) to
choose what goes to what output (although things like the kick are hardwired).

If you are playing from a midi keyboard you will need to have the Superior Audio
Instrument track selected in the arrange, and this is where all the midi plays back from.

You might want to assign all the channels to a bus for over all compression/dynamics, etc.

NOTE Save the song as a template before you start playing. Also, if you save the song
template with the superior plug instantiated it will remember where the auxes come from!

NOTE2; Superior can be a pain, as once you've changed the stereo mixdown setting, it will
stay changed until you manually change it back, IT DOES NOT SAVE THIS WITH YOUR
SONG, so if you have older project where you use it in stereo mixdown mode, all you will
hear will be the ambient mic, unless you change it back (and re-instantiate the superior
plug)

Hope this helps, if you still want my template, let me know and I'll send it when I get back
to the studio,

Mike

I was under the impression that you actually need to go into the AU
scanner, deselect drummer and reinstate it to change between multi
and stereo mixdown.
It might have changed, but it has always worked this way previously.

Hmm, been a while since i used it in stereo, but i don't remember having to do this
recently (ie since V 7.2.3) You could be right though.
