RAID success with Logic 8

RAID success with Logic 8

2008-04-29 by bloodychoir

Hi, a question for anyone with their drives arrayed for speed and using Logic 8. A while ago I
installed one of the internal drive brackets in my dual 1.8 pmac G5 so as to RAID three extra
drives and improve audio throughput. Although it came up fine as a single large drive I
noticed little if any improvement over a stock 7400rpm drive I'd been using previously.
Some hours of net research later I discovered a couple of small threads about the
redundancy of RAID if you're using Logic Pro 7. From memory the manner in which that
program read from drives created it's own software bottleneck and therefore made it
pointless to have RAIDed drives. Whether this is verifiable or established I know not, I
received no response from any questions directed to official sources, and a lot of dollars and
wasted time later I gave up and got on with recording. Apologies for the long haul but does
anyone have genuine speed improvement with their audio using a RAID array and Logic 8?

Thanks.
