What is a "classic smily face" eq setting? It that just a U shape (with base and high end boosts, and mid cut)? And I can see how that might be useful on some things ... although a bit of an effect ... but certainly you wouldn't do that kind of radical eq to very many tracks would you?

I usually do just the opposite. I add a *small* bit of a boost to the
midrange of my vocal tracks to give my voice a little more warmth and umph
without being harsh.
