Apple Mice and Keyboard cheap

Apple Mice and Keyboard cheap

2005-01-12 by GAmoore@aol.com

Apple must have lowered the prices on thier keyboards and mice. I was a local store tonight and saw some of the Apple optical mice that I paid $59 now going for $29, and also $29 for the apple large keyboard.

You'd have to pay me more than $29 to use that POS keyboard. :)

And hey, what happened to that cheap Firewire interface?

NAMM? :)

I think it has one advantage ... in os X... I lost the use of a few function keys because the OS makes them speaker volume incr/dec. I think this keyboard has separate keys for some of those functions. Also, I have been using an old serial keyboard (from a 1990 mac IIfx... but its big and rock solid with room for template with keycommands ).. through a conversion device from USB and I am thinking that the fewer gizmos, the better in terms of stability. It also takes up less desk space, and it was nicer than the $100 "better keyboard" sold by a third party. But I have yet to find a really great keyboard.

The problem is that it's impossible to type on because the feel is so poor.

I used Extended Keyboard IIs through a Griffin adapter until I got a
KVM switch that wants real USB in its keyboard input (IOGear 4-port
Miniview). The MacAlley iKey is 99% as good, so I use those now.

Keyboards are all stable.

The Extended Keyboard II is the best keyboard for typing on, in my
opinion. I think it qualifies as great. Remember, it sold for $150.
There was a smaller Apple keyboard that felt just as good, but it
didn't have as many buttons.

I have about 10 keyboards and various mice in my garage in all shapes
and sizes, but I only use one. It's ridiculous.

Thanks for your comments Nick. What stores in LA stock those keyboards? Apple store and Fry's don't have that much. My favorite computer store is Tustin Microcenter, but they had only a few types.

Those will come hand when you start buying six packs of miniMacs. ;-)

Gee, what's a good keyboard then? I've only used Apple ones after I
couldn't get a couple of third party units to author selected key
commands. Ignorance is bliss I suppose. Can you recommend a good one
that's solid and accepts all the key commands?

The MacAlly iKey? I bought the two I have a Fry's, but you can find
them all over the place. eBay is a good source for computer keyboards.

If they were a short step closer to being MIDI Macs, we'd all buy them... :)

The reason I don't like the Apple Pro keyboard is that I type very
fast and it causes me to make lots of mistakes. If you don't have
that problem, it's not a problem. I should have qualified my dissing.
Sorry.

I use a MacAlly iKey, but I'm not sure it has all those keys (volume
up, etc.). But they're unimportant to me. I open the CD tray from an
icon on the menu bar (I forget how to put it there, but it was
simple), and the MOTU hardware I'm using doesn't have a volume
control for system sound anyway.

Ok, cool. I certainly don't have the "typing too fast" problem so I
guess I'm good to go.

GAmoore,
Have you tried LA Computer Company in Anaheim? It's one of those
places that just happens to have, in stock, that adaptor that no one
else has heard of. They have some good deals on new Macs too, like the
free Applecare package I got on my G5 2X2.

http://www.lacomputercompany.com/

I don't work for them - Just a happy customer.

NIck,
I wish you could remember this process as I replaced my keyboard ,
because of space restraints, with a mini hacker lite(It has no 10 key
pad). I still have an Apple hangin on the USB port for ejecting disks.
Thanks!
