2nd try - Logic as slave for a midi file?

2nd try - Logic as slave for a midi file?

2009-12-16 by austin.lanny

Given all the knowledge I see out there I'm still hoping someone can help me set up Logic to "accept" a dump(?) of a Korg O1W 16 trk midi file so I might study that file and all it's cool intricacies within a super prg like Logic Express. Is it an environment problem or .....?
Thanks

Why don't you just import the midi file in to logic?

Cheers

Martin

Just import the file into Logic?

EASY!

So that's why no one responded! BUT --

The file I'm referring to is on a floppy disc which I then load into the O1W's sequencing memory.
I assume(?) I will then have to "play" it via midi cables in real time to record it into Logic??

It is NOT a file sitting on my computer desktop already.

Sorry for these stupid questions but what am I missing here that seems so obvious to you?

And Please understand I appreciate your patience w me as a newbe!

THANK YOU!

Lanny,

Not sure if this will help, but you can buy a USB External Floppy Disk drive that you can plug into your computer. This will probably allow you to get the files into your computer. I'm not sure about how to convert the file so that Logic will recognize it.

External floppy drives don't work because they do not recognize the discs which have been formatted
in Korg's own system - this formatting is done in the O1W before the disc can be recorded to (with a Korg midi file).
Thanks anyway.

It seems to me you could simply record the midi data into LE in real-time and then do a quick quantize, but that's just me. If you have ROM# 62 you can format a new blank floppy as an MS-DOS compatible SMF disk - Standard MIDI File - then save your sequence to this disk. There are two types of format available under disk mode. The SMF format should be compatible with most USB floppy drives. If all this works out, you will have a MIDI type 0 file that you can import into Logic. Bank and preset messages may or may not work or may actually send the wrong info depending on the hardware/software rev of your particular synth.

Midi implementation, Sysex dumps, sequencer track dumps... Seems all of this changed several times over the life of the 01W as Korg addressed numerous minor bugs. You will need the entire final season of 21 Jump Street on VHS playing continuously in order to get it to work properly.

There is a very good 01W resource at http://indra.com/~cliffcan/01online.htm put together by Ken Westover.

Move to quarantaine

This moves the raw source file on disk only. The archive index is not changed automatically, so you still need to run a manual refresh afterward.
