At the risk of pointing out the obvious, it means they didn't test it. If
they had tested it and it didn't work, it would be listed as "incompatible".
And since they didn't test it, they probably don't support it.
Media Center Edition has some processes running within it that XP does not.
MCE has been optimized for one thing -- allowing the machine to be used as a
home media center. Having said that, there are some sites that have posted
information on stripping down MCE to be more responsive. Unfortunately, as
far as I can tell, those optimizations cripple MCE's ability to do what it
was designed to do. And the processes it runs are probably what is slowing
down GS3.
And Virtual PC probably won't be any better, regardless of the OS it's
running under. The simple nature of VPC dictates that it is sharing CPU
cycles with the host operating system (in your case, MCE). That means that
the VPC image isn't getting the full use of the machine. Moreover, I'm not
sure how VPC would deal with your MIDI interface unless it is hooked up to
one of the serial ports.
Do you have the option of simply installing standard XP on your machine? I
assume you got the VAIO so that you could listen to music or record TV
shows. If so, then standard XP won't help you because it won't have the MCE
extensions.
What audio card are you using with GS3?
