Steering joints

2002-05-24 by a5h_pm

Hi there, thanks for all your help so far, I thought I ought to share
some of the information I have found so far about the sterring joints.

I was worried about the ammount of play in my cars sterring system,
and tried removing all the components onlt to find that the first two
linkages, rose joint and Universal joint must all have been fitted to
the chasis prior to welding the final chassis diagonal brace into
place! this of course means cutting the chassis or cutting the first
linkage - the one that the steering column fits over as it comes
through the bulkhead.

My car is one of the early cars which has the Universal Joints (UJ's)
welded to the linkage bars. These joints are no longer available
(acording to Marcos Heritage), and there for the replacment of the
entire set up is necessary. The cost of this I have found to be £25
for each linkage bar (3 in total), £25 for each UJ (3 again), and £25
for each of the rose joints (2 in total), this is exclusive of VAT.
Once fitted all the parts may be replaced individually without the
need for cutting or welding!

On another subject I have start some basic enquiries about 5 speed
box conversion for the Ford 3 litre set up, it sounds like comination
of a 5 speed box from a Ford Granada 2.8litre car along with the
bellhousing from a Granada 2.5 litre will fit together and work
successfully. Any other feedback is welcome. I am sure with a little
bit of digging round the Ford users groups I could find out more.

I hope this is of use to some of you!
Cheers
